Ningbo Orient Wires & Cables Co., Ltd. (NBO), a leading provider of subsea cable solutions in China, has secured a contract to supply the HVDC cable system for a new 2GW High Voltage Direct Current (HVDC) offshore wind farm project - the Sanshan Island OWF in Guangdong.

Project Overview

  • Transmission Capacity: 2GW
  • Cable System: 500kV HVDC, 2500mm² subsea cable
  • Route Length: Approximately 118 kilometers
  • Distinction: Longest offshore distance for an offshore wind farm cable in China

This project follows NBO’s recent commencement of mass production for China’s first 2GW HVDC 500kV subsea cable project earlier in 2025, showing the company’s rapid progress in HVDC products.

Industry Impact and Technological Significance

The new contract addresses the technical challenges of large-scale, long-distance power transmission from offshore wind farms to the mainland grid. The 500kV HVDC 2500mm² subsea cable system not only sets a new benchmark for offshore wind in China but is also expected to serve as a foundational standard for future 500kV HVDC offshore systems.

The successful delivery of this project will help to support China’s ambitions to expand offshore wind capacity and increase the share of renewable energy in its national grid.

Company Statement

NBO emphasized that this achievement is the result of long-term research and development investment and a commitment to redefining the boundaries of what is possible in clean energy transmission. The company remains dedicated to driving global progress in sustainable power infrastructure and supporting the next generation of offshore wind projects.
