Rongxin Huiko Electric Company (RXHK) has been awarded a contract from State Grid Corporation of China (SGCC) for the design and supply of converter valves and controls for the Xiangyue back-to-back voltage source converter (VSC) HVDC project. The scope of supply comprises four sets of 260kV, 1.5GW valves and associated control systems.

The Xiangyue scheme is a back-to-back HVDC interconnection that will link the SGCC network in Hunan province with the China Southern Power Grid (CSG) system in Guangdong province. The project is one of three back-to-back schemes for which SGCC issued integrated feasibility and equipment procurement tenders in December 2024, alongside the Yu-Qian (Chongqing-Guizhou) domestic interconnection and the China-Nepal cross-border interconnection. The Xiangyue and Yu-Qian back-to-back projects are each rated at 3GW, while the China-Nepal scheme has a rated capacity of 375MW.

SGCC and CSG currently operate as separate synchronous AC systems. Back-to-back VSC HVDC enables asynchronous interconnection between the two networks, supports controllable bidirectional power exchange, and limits the propagation of short-circuit currents between the interconnected systems. The Hunan provincial government's New-Type Power System Development Plan identifies the Xiangyue back-to-back project as a flagship scheme targeted for commissioning during China's 15th Five-Year Plan period (2026-2030), with the stated objective of repositioning Hunan from a terminal node on the SGCC system into a regional exchange hub between SGCC and CSG.

The contract continues a sequence of back-to-back VSC HVDC awards for RXHK. The company previously supplied converter valves for the Luxi back-to-back project, which provided asynchronous interconnection between the Yunnan Power Grid and the main CSG network, and for the Yu'E (Chongqing-Hubei) back-to-back interconnection, where RXHK delivered a ±420kV/1250MW B2B converter valve for the northern channel. RXHK also supplied four sets of ±300kV/1500MW converter valves and controls for the CSG Guangdong back-to-back HVDC project, which comprises indoor B2B converter stations at Dongguan and Zengcheng in Guangdong province and was commissioned in 2022.
