NeuConnect’s UK-side Cables Installed

The first direct energy link between the UK and Germany – NeuConnect – has moved another step closer, with all subsea cabling now in place in UK waters. NeuConnect’s huge 700km subsea cabling programme is now continuing with the world’s largest cable laying vessel – the ‘Prysmian Leonardo da Vinci’ – moving from the UK into Dutch waters.
Led by global investors Meridiam, Allianz, Kansai Electric Power and TEPCO, the £2.4bn/€2.8bn NeuConnect project will be one of the world’s largest interconnectors with 725km of land and subsea cables forming an ‘invisible energy highway’ to connect two of Europe’s largest energy markets for the first time. The new link will allow 1.4GW of electricity – enough to power up to 1.5 million homes – to flow in either direction, helping to boost energy security while also helping to integrate renewable energy sources in the UK and Germany.
NeuConnect’s subsea cabling works are being carried out by main contractor Prysmian, the global cable solutions provider. Prysmian completed an earlier phase of cabling works in UK waters in 2025 and, following the winter break, cabling works resumed earlier this year which have now seen:
All UK cabling now in place, with more than 260km of subsea cabling in total
- The latest phase of works has seen all subsea cabling in UK waters now in place, with more than 260km now laid in total – the equivalent distance of London to Manchester
- Over the coming weeks, work will continue to finalise the cable installation in UK waters
The world’s largest cable-laying vessel now moving into Dutch waters
- Prysmian’s state-of-the-art ‘Prysmian Leonardo da Vinci’ vessel has now passed from UK waters and moved into Dutch waters where it will continue to install a further 140km of subsea cabling over the coming months
- At 171m long and 34m wide, the ‘Prysmian Leonardo da Vinci’ is the largest andmost advanced cable-laying vessel in the world
Onshore cabling works continue in Germany
- Onshore cabling works in northern Germany are also making good progress. Horizontal Directional Drilling (HDD) works will be completed this summer, with 12km of onshore cabling to be installed from the near shore area of the North Sea to NeuConnect’s Converter Station buildings that are under construction in Wilhelmshaven
NeuConnect CEO Arnaud Grévoz said: “With NeuConnect’s huge 700km cabling programme now moving from the UK into Dutch waters, we continue to make good progress. Every kilometre of cabling laid by Prysmian is helping to bring this vital new UK-German energy link ever closer and we remain on track.”
