Orient Cable Begins Mass Production of 500kV HVDC Cables for China's first 2GW Offshore System

Orient Cable (NBO), a Chinese manufacturer of high-voltage direct current (HVDC) cables, has announced a significant milestone in the development of the Yangjiang 2GW HVDC system which will transmit power from the Qingzhou 5 & 7 offshore wind farms. The company has entered the mass production phase for its 184km of ±500kV HVDC 2500mm² export cables, marking a milestone in China's first 2GW offshore system.

This project follows on from the completion of Rudong in 2021 - the first ever offshore HVDC system in China.

The commencement of mass production follows the preparation process, which included obtaining design approval from China Three Gorges Corporation (CTG) and conducting extensive trial production to ensure optimal cable performance. Orient Cable, also known as Ningbo Orient Wires & Cables Co., Ltd., emphasized their commitment to quality and reliability throughout the development stages. As the project progresses, the company has pledged to provide regular updates, highlighting the importance of this project in advancing renewable energy infrastructure in China
